I’ve got lots of music lovers in my life. Some are collectors and some want to be in the now with the latest pop-culture has to offer.

Some are gear heads and some just want high-quality sound. Of course, when you think of things like headphones and speakers, you probably don’t think, “eco-friendly,” do you?

But there are plenty of eco-friendly gifts for music lovers out there. You just need to know where to look.

Most of the gift ideas listed below are made by House of Marley. A Black-owned business that uses eco-friendly materials like bamboo and FSC certified wood, and recycled rubber. Plus, they support global reforestation through One Tree Planted.

Below, I’ve got 4 ideas for gifts for music lovers, ordered from lowest to highest price using the low-end of the price range indicated. Note that prices and availability may vary—last updated: Sept. 30, 2020.

TL;DR

Headphones ($20-100 USD)

Every music lover needs headphones. Heck, most need multiple sets. I’ve got one for work and one for walking. Plus I’ve got in-ear and on-ear headphones for whatever mood I might be in.

Before shopping:

  • Do they prefer on-ear or in-ear headphones?
  • Are they active, listening to music while moving? If so, Bluetooth is probably the way to go.

Wired Headphones

Wired headphones plug into whatever device you’re listening to music on. And they tend to cost a little less than BlueTooth. Their lower cost makes them a great option for on-the-go listening or travel. If you leave them on the bus, or in a hotel room, they’re easy to replace.

Bluetooth Headphones

Bluetooth headphones give you freedom from being tethered to your device. Whether it lets you walk away from your computer without interrupting your flow or frees you from those awkward arms straps on your morning run, Bluetooth is super convenient.

House of Marley makes both wired and Bluetooth headphones, for in- and on-ear using recycled rubber and plant-based plastics.

Bluetooth Speakers ($70-200 USD)

Eco-friendly Bluetooth speakers? Yes, indeedy! Waterproof? Obvs.

I don’t think I even own a speaker that isn’t Bluetooth anymore. I use them at home and on the go. Waterproof is perfect for camping or taking on a boat. Heck, even in the shower, or as a safe option for a bubble bath.

So, really, a good Bluetooth speaker is a great gift for anyone!

Before shopping:

  • Is your music lover more into aesthetics or functionality?
  • Are they active and like to take their music outside or on a boat?
  • Do they have kids who might want to play around the speaker?

Based on those answers you can choose between the waterproof sport speakers and the more elegant mini speaker below.

If they’ve got kids, the more resilient waterproof option is a good choice to protect against spills and roughhousing.

The No Bounds Sport Waterproof speaker even floats! Does your Bluetooth speaker do that? Waterproof or not,  all of these speakers are made from post-consumer recycled materials, and every purchase plants a tree.

Turntables ($200-250 USD)

Ok, this one is for the true music connoisseur. If you’ve got a friend or loved one in your life who collects records and says stuff like, “it just sounds better on vinyl.” This is the gift for them.

Granted, it’s not a cheap gift, but it’s sure to win best gift of the year!

Before shopping:

  • Does your favorite music lover own records?
  • Do they already have a turntable?

I’ve mentioned how great House of Marley is for the environment, but I haven’t mentioned that they offer products with amazing sound quality too!

According to the reviews, this turntable has great sound quality. One reviewer says, “I’ve worked in music for 10 years and can confidently tell you that this turntable will in no way disappoint.

That’s a pretty solid review! And there are plenty more where that came from.
