Best Non-Toxic Phone Case for 2020

New Phone Day only comes around once every few years. And it’s always an exciting day. But for me, it also comes with a twinge of guilt at all the waste that goes with it. There’s all the packaging, the new phone, and the phone you’re trading up from (that probably still works just fine) the new charger and, if you’re getting an iPhone, a new set of earbuds that I personally never even use, I just leave them in the box until I get a new one and sell my old phone.

And then there are the phone cases. I had four cases from my last phone that didn’t fit my new phone. Aside from figuring out how to properly dispose of those cases, I had to get a new one for my new phone. This time, I wanted my new case to be non-toxic and eco-friendly. So I did some research to find the best non-toxic phone case on the market today. Pela Case is what I found.

TL;DR

Why should I buy a non-toxic phone case?

The planet is virtually drowning in plastic, which is toxic and is not biodegradable. So your plastic phone case will be around for probably at least 500 years, and really, probably a lot longer. If you’ve got a silicone case, you’re doing better. Silicone will degrade over time and it will release fewer toxins along the way, so silicone is better than plastic. But we can do better. That’s why I got myself a non-toxic, bio-degradable case for my phone. If protecting the environment is insufficient motivation, here are some other reasons to get a non-toxic phone case:
  • If you have small children who put everything in their mouth – you should get a non-toxic case.
  • If you have a dog, or other animals, who chews on everything … sometimes even your phone case – you should probably get a non-toxic case.
  • If you’re at all worried about cancer-causing chemicals … you should definitely get a non-toxic case.
  • If you’re a hipster who just likes to do stuff before the trend hits, well, you could probably also benefit from a non-toxic phone case.
There are probably lots of other scenarios that lend themselves to the case for a non-toxic case, but I think you get the point. Whether you’re concerned about the planet, your kids, or yourself, non-toxic is always a safe bet.Really, the only reason I’d think about getting a different case would be if I needed some major protection. Like waterproof and all that. But personally, I usually find those cases to be more of a hindrance than a help unless you’re an avid snorkeler or mountain climber or something.

What is Pela Case?

Pela Case is an entirely compostable phone case made from plants. It’s made of what they call Flaxstic®, which is a compostable combination of bio-plastic elastomer and flax straw materials. The material has been tested and found to be safe and free from phthalates, BPA, cadmium, and lead. Plus, it’s verified to meet child safety standards in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Non-toxic indeed. In fact, in order to be considered compostable, a material has to be non-toxic. It must be able to return to a completely organic state. You can literally put this case in your backyard compost. Don’t have one? Me either, but that’s no problem. When I’m done with my case I can send it right back to Pela Case and they’ll take care of it. Or, I can drop it in an industrial compost if I have one available to me. For example, the office I work at has a compost bin and some public areas, like malls, have compost bins – you can throw your Pela case in any of those bins for composting. The Pela Case design is pretty much your standard phone case. They make them for iPhone and Android (Samsung Galaxy and Note, Google Pixel, and Huawei). They fit snugly and absorb impact; and they are certified impact resistant up to six feet, but they claim to have tested from greater heights … I’ve dropped mine a few times and so far, so good. The case is great, but then so is the company. If you’re concerned about buying from ethical company’s, this is another area where Pela excels. The company’s goal is to create a waste-free future. They saw a need in the phone case space and stepped in to help reduce the waste generated by the 1 billion plastic phone cases sold each year – yes, 1 BILLION.Pela is also a member of 1% for the Planet, which means that at least one percent of their annual sales are donated to environmental causes. Pela donates their 1% to Save the Waves, helping to keep the oceans clean.

But is it good a quality case?

Many people are worried that a compostable case may not be durable. In fact, they seem to think it will start to break down while they are using it. Not true.

Though it’s compostable, that does not mean it’s just going to start breaking down as you use it. In order for anything to compost, it must be in a composting environment. It needs the perfect combination of air, moisture, sunlight, and microorganisms to actually break down. If you’ve never tried to compost, just ask someone who has – it does not happen on accident or overnight.

Pela Case is designed to break down in a back yard compost — which actually kind of blows my mind! — or in industrial compost. The cases will break down faster in an industrial compost environment (but I mean, literally everything will break down faster in an industrial process, sooo).

But even in your personal compost, they’ll break down over time, but it takes an estimate six or more months. If it takes six months to break down in perfect conditions … I doubt it’s going to fall apart in your pocket. In fact, if you throw it in the regular trash bin, it probably won’t even break down. That’s because the condition for composting are rarely met in landfills. So even stuff that is biodegradable or compostable doesn’t break down in a landfill … but that’s a topic for another post.

But don’t take my word for it. They’ve got over 200,000 reviews with a five-star rating … that’s just nuts! Here are a couple of reviews.
